Discipleship is a natural, foregoing part of following Jesus in our newfound life with him. There are four very important areas to which we need to become involved:
FELLOWSHIP: A great deal of what we become is contingent upon the kind of company that we keep. Therefore, it is of the essence that we fellowship with other believers. And of course, we fellowship with other believers primarily through the church. With this in mind, it is so very important to find a fellowship of believers that meets our preference and get involved with them. It is not my place to tell you what should be your preference; however I do feel obligated to tell you to do your homework and not let just any group be your choice. I will share my preference with you and then you can decide if it is anywhere near being what you would expect also:
I expect the church group that I fellowship with to first of all believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God; I’m sorry to say that not all do. Secondly, I would want to know that they accept the deity of Jesus Christ. That is, they believe that Jesus is the virgin born son of God and equal with God in all respects; once again many don’t. Thirdly, I want to know that their mode of baptism is by immersion only. The word “baptism” means to immerse and this is the only mode of baptism you will ever find in scripture. Fourthly, I would need to know that they worship together on the first day of the week as the New Testament church practiced. Fifthly, I want to know that they are evangelical, that is that they hold evangelism to a high degree and that is the winning of the lost. There are other things that I could mention but these are the basics.
BIBLE STUDY: We get to know God through the reading and study of his word; we also learn what God expects of us and what he wants us to do in our lives. There are many ways to study the Bible; however, I would recommend for a new believer that they start off just reading through the bible. You can purchase a bible that will guide you through the entire scripture in a year by reading about four chapters a day; usually takes about twenty or thirty minutes. I like to read the bible first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening and also connect it to a quiet time and a time of prayer and meditation. You will be best served by designing a time that best meets your schedule and needs. I would strongly urge you to be consistent. It is proven that after we do something for thirty days in a row that it becomes a habit.
PRAYER: Prayer is another way that we get to know God. You may say, “I don’t know how to pray” and that is alright. It is something that we need to learn. The twelve disciples of our Lord asked him one day, “Lord teach us how to pray” and Jesus gave them what we call “the Lord’s Prayer”; actually it is not the Lord’s Prayer in the sense that this is what he prayed or is it a prayer that he intended for us to recite but it is an example of how we should pray. It is the “model prayer”:
Matthew After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
6:10. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
6:11. Give us this day our daily bread.
6:12. and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
6:13. and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Notice the words in bold type: First, start your prayer by praising God, “Dear God
I praise you as my Father (or any other words of praise you want to add). You
may also list the things for which you are thankful. I like to mention five things
each morning; it makes my day go better to start with a positive attitude.
Secondly, notice in the model prayer the words “give us”. We are to
pray asking God to fulfill our needs as well as our desires and be specific. We all
have many needs and concerns, so there will be no shortage of things that we can
mention to God here. Don’t forget to pray for the needs of others. Thirdly, we
are to pray for forgiveness and again be specific. Remember that God’s
conditions for forgiving our trespasses is if we also forgive others theirs.
And then lastly, the model prayer ends with more praise and adoration.
WITNESSING: Witnessing is sharing our faith with others and the greatest hindrance is fear. You have a much easier way than I when I first started; you can just send someone to this website; or go here with them; after a while, youwill be able share your faith whenever and wherever.
