Baptism

THE MEANING OF BAPTISM

Baptism is an English transliteration of a Greek root word which means immersion. That is the only type of baptism found in Scripture and it is the only mode that correctly shows what is intended by baptism and that is the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord. “Know ye not, that as many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him in baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in the newness of life. For we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:” (Romans 6:3-5)

Immersion is how John the Baptist baptized and this is the way Jesus our Lord was baptized. Other modes of baptism were brought to play by men and are not to be found anywhere in Scripture.

Baptism is also a confirmation to the world that we believe what it shows and that is the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. It also is a picture of what has happened to us as believers in Jesus. To be lowered into the water represents the death of our old self and when we are raised from the water, it represents the new resurrected life we have in Jesus. Baptism is also a requirement for church membership.

Please don’t settle for anything less than baptism by immersion. If it was good enough for Jesus, surely it is right for us.

Baptism is one of two ordinances that our Lord told us to remember, the other being the Lord’s Supper.
